Broome's Festival of the Pearl began 41 years ago. In 1970 the community of Broome decided to turn the Shinju Matsuri into a Festival to not only acknowledge the Pearling Industry, but to also showcase Broome's beauty, history and community to the outside world.
Friday 13 September - Sunday 22 September 2013
Broome, Western Australia

From the high spirited and colourful waking of Sammy the Dragon after his
yearlong slumber; across ten days of festivity bolstered through events for and put on by the community; to a spectacular fireworks finale; Shinju Matsuri is the premier arts, cultural and community event in Broome, Western Australia.
An experience like no other, the beautiful northwest town of Broome comes
alive with 9 days of festivities that showcases talents of Broome including
traditional and contemporary arts, and industry, community and tourism events which celebrate and acknowledge the town's unique culture, history and diversity.
Shinju Matsuri encourages all cultural groups from the Broome community to
participate in the celebrations to develop constructive and harmonious Broome community relationships.
Whether you visiting Broome, a new member of the community or a true local, Shinju Matsuri is for everyone!
You are invited to design and drive a float, perform on stage, submit a work
for the art prize, carry a flag, steer a boat, participate in a workshop, taste
pearl meat and honour our patrons. Come show the love for this multi-cultural community with pride, participation and passion!
The traditions and knowledge of the history of the Shinju Matsuri Festival,
from those in the community who have contributed so much, will only enhance the festival into future years. The Board of Shinju Matsuri invites those who have participated and assisted in previous festivals, new members of the community and everyone in Broome to enjoy the festivities that present a community working together in a true celebration of all the various cultures and people who call Broome their home.
